It is a type of grotto architectural ornament. The front sections of the ceilings in the Mogao Grottoes that were built during the Northern Dynasties are generally Y-shaped. Beams, purlins, rafters, and square roof trusses are sculpted or painted with colored patterns on the front and back slopes of the Y-shaped ceilings of these caves.
