Petaled Five-string Lute

It is also called Petaled Five-string Ruan Xin or Five-string Plum Ruan Xian. It is found among the sutra illustration band on the north wall of Cave No.220 (Early Tang Dynasty). The image is complete, distinctive and elegant with classic simplicity. The sound box is shaped as a five-petal blossom. There are five strings, five tuning pegs and frets on it. The neck is long and its head is curved. There is an armrest with patterns on the sound box. The musician playing the Petaled Five-string Lute is elegant with the head slightly tilted. The musician is twisting the pegs with the left hand and plucking the strings with right hand, as if tuning up before performance. The whole image is vivid and impressive. As the body of Petaled Five-string Lute is large with broad belly, it is estimated to be a low-pitch instrument.
